Border Patrol agents seized over 1.1 million pounds of marijuana, nearly 8,000 pounds of cocaine and 157 pounds of heroin. The combined value of the narcotics is almost $1.2 billion, according to CBP officials.

Agents in the Tucson, Arizona Sector accounted for nearly 46 percent of the total marijuana seizures with more than 1,750 seizures weighing in at more than 522,796 pounds.

CBP official say that the Border Patrol continues to enhance border security by innovative programs such as the Secure Border Initiative, which will increase border security effectiveness through the right mix of personnel, infrastructure, technology and rapid response capability. These enhancements allow frontline agents to be more effective in preventing terrorists, criminals, and the illegal entry of aliens.

While apprehensions this fiscal year edged up 1 percent when compared to fiscal year 2005, the number of other-than-Mexican alien apprehensions dropped nearly 20 percent. Other-than-Mexican apprehensions totaled 89,059 this year, according to the CBP.
