Democrats Have Early Head Start in Race for Hawaii Governor’s Seat

Both Democrats seeking their party’s nomination for governor of Hawaii are leading the likely Republican candidate for the job, according to a Mason-Dixon poll conducted Jan. 8-12 for the Honolulu Star Bulletin.

Ten-term Democratic Rep. Neil Abercrombie is in a tight race with Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann to win the party’s nomination for governor, with Abercrombie leading 37 percent to 34 percent with 29 percent undecided. The margin of error is 3.5 points.

In general election match-ups, both Democrats lead Republican Lt. Gov James Aiona Jr., who is the GOP’s expected candidate. Abercrombie leads him 43 percent to 34 percent with 23 percent undecided and Hannemann runs ahead of Aiona by by 41 percent to 35 percent with 24 percent undecided.

The race is to succeed two-term Republican Gov. Linda Lingle, who cannot run again because of term limits.
