First Major Public Debates in Hawaii on the Akaka Bill to Occur Aug. 22-24

Confused about Bill (S. 147) – Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2005, known as the Akaka Bill, which is pending in Congress?

To help clarify what the passage of the Akaka Bill will mean to the people of Hawaii, four events have been scheduled in Hawaii for next week.

*On Monday, Aug. 22, from 8 to 9 a.m. on the Rick Hamada Show on Radio KHVH830, hear what Bruce Fein, Constitutional law attorney, and Robert Klein, board counsel for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, have to say about the Akaka Bill.

*On Monday, Aug. 22, from 8 to 9 p.m., Island Insights will hold a panel discussion, to air on KHON-TV2 and PBS Hawaii, on the Akaka Bill, with Tina Shelton as the hostess, and panalists in favor of the bill: Mark Bennett, Attorney General of Hawaii and Robert Klein, board counsel for OHA; and panalists in opposition to the bill: Bruce Fein, Constitutional law attorney, and Kaleikoa Kaeo for Hui Pu and NOA (Not of America). This event is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Hawaii and the Hawaii Institute for Public Affairs.

*On Tuesday, Aug. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. a public debate at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, located at 2454 S. Beretania St., is scheduled to be held. Moderator: Family Court Judge Mike Broderick; and panelists: Mark Bennett, AG of the state of Hawaii, Bruce Fein, Constitutional law attorney, Robert Klein, board counsel for OHA and Anne Keala Kelly, Native Hawaiian journalist and filmmaker. This event is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Hawaii and the Hawaii Institute for Public Affairs.

*On Wednesday Aug. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m., an informational briefing is scheduled at the State Capitol in Room 225, with Bruce Fein, Constitutional law attorney.
