Hawaii Bankers Association Warns of Fraudulent 'Phishing' Text Messages

The Hawaii Bankers Association (HBA) is warning of fraudulent text and voice messages being received by cell phone customers in Hawaii. The fraudulent messages state that the person's credit card account has been blocked or deactivated and instruct them to push #1 or to call a number to reactivate the card. These scams are devised to try and obtain a person's credit card number along with personal identification numbers or other personal account information.

Individuals who receive these messages should not respond. Financial institutions will never ask for confidential account information by telephone or text message.
Here are some important reminders:
  • Financial institutions do not call or text customers requesting personal I.D. information (SSN, PIN, account numbers, passwords, etc.)
  • Any such request should be viewed as highly suspicious and recipients should not respond.
  • Recipients should confirm the validity of suspicious requests by contacting the company, using phone numbers or email addresses that are known to be legitimate.
  • In the event a recipient mistakenly provides personal information, he or she should immediately contact their financial institution.

The Hawaii Bankers Association is a trade organization made up of FDIC insured depository institutions in Hawaii, including:  American Savings Bank, Bank of Hawaii, Bank of the Orient, Central Pacific Bank, Finance Factors, First Hawaiian Bank, Hawaii National Bank, HomeStreet Bank, Ohana Pacific Bank, Pacific Rim Bank and Territorial Savings Bank.
