Hawaii Man Indicted for Distributing Methamphetamine

Florence T. Nakakuni, United States Attorney for the District of Hawaii, announced today that on June 1, 2011, a federal jury returned guilty verdicts against Ashford Kaipo Spencer, age 57, on two counts of knowing and intentional distribution of methamphetamine.

Spencer distributed ounce quantities of methamphetamine to a confidential source in April and June of 2009 within the vicinity of the Waimanalo Shopping Center.

Upon conviction, Spencer was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal.

According to United States Attorney Nakakuni, Spencer has two prior state felony convictions involving crimes of violence. As a result of the instant felony conviction, Spencer faces a potential prison sentence of 360 months to life without parole.

United States Attorney Nakakuni commended the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Honolulu Police Department for conducting the investigation in this case and for their United States Attorney District of Hawaii continuing efforts to combat illegal drug trafficking.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Chris A. Thomas and Ronald G. Johnson prosecuted the case.
