Hawaii’s May Energy Trend Data Released

Following are highlights:

1.        Crude oil price at the New York Mercantile Exchange averaged $101.36 per barrel in May 2011 which was 36.8% higher compared to the same month last year.  Crude oil price decreased $8.68 per barrel or 7.9% from April 2011.
2.        In March 2011 import of foreign crude oil totaled 3.9 million barrels or up 49.6% compared to the same month a year ago.  The foreign crude oil imported showed an increase of 989 thousand barrels or 34.0% from the previous month.  There were no other foreign imports of petroleum products to Hawaii during the month of March 2011.

3.        In May 2011, the national average price for regular gasoline was $3.902 per gallon, which represented a 37.2% increase from the same month a year ago.  Hawaii’s May 2011 price for regular gasoline averaged $4.377, which was about $0.476 or 12.2% higher than the national average for the same month.  Hawaii’s May 2011 price for regular gasoline decreased $0.083 or 1.9% from April 2011.  Among the prices of regular gasoline for Honolulu, Wailuku, and Hilo, as reported by the American Automobile Association, Wailuku had the highest average price at $4.794 which remained unchanged from the previous month (April 2011).  The average price of regular gasoline for Honolulu was $4.258 which was a decrease of $0.101 or 2.3% from April 2011.  Hilo’s average price of regular gasoline was $4.326 and represented a decrease of $0.151 or 3.4% from April 2011.

4.        In May 2011, the national average price for diesel was $4.098 per gallon, which was an increase of 33.0% from the same month a year ago.  In Hawaii, the average price for diesel in May 2011 was $4.846 which was $0.747 or 18.2% higher than the national average.  In May 2011, Hilo had the highest average price of diesel, at $5.040, among Hawaii’s market, which represented an increase of $0.113 or 2.3% from the previous month.  The average diesel price for Wailuku was $4.958, which was an increase of $0.096 or 2.0% from April 2011.  Honolulu’s average price for diesel was $4.727 which was an increase of $0.62 or 1.3% from the previous month.

5.        Hawaii’s statewide demand for gasoline, as measured by the gasoline tax base, increased 52.2% in March 2011 from the same month a year ago.  Hawaii’s statewide demand for gasoline in March 2011 also showed an increase of 7.1 million gallons or 16.6% from February 2011.  Maui County showed a 3.9 million gallon increase of gasoline delivered by fuel distributors which reflected 115.6% increase from the same month last year.  Maui County also showed an increase of about 796 thousand gallons or 12.3% from February 2011.  Year-to-date, the Department of Taxation data showed that fuel distributors shipped 130.8 million gallons of gasoline, representing  an increase of 30.4% from  the same period  last year.

6.        Hawaii’s March 2011 demand for diesel, highway use, as measured by the diesel oil tax based, was 6.0 million gallons, representing  a decrease of 29.3% compared to the same period a year ago.  Hawaii’s demand for diesel, highway use, increased about 1.2 million gallons or 25.7% from February 2011.

7.        As of May 2011, there were 935,532 registered taxable gasoline passenger vehicles in the state, 2.1% increase from the same period last year (May 2010).  There were 9,912 registered passenger hybrid vehicles, accounted for 1.0% of the total 954,163 registered passenger vehicles in May 2011, and represented an increase of 83 vehicles or 0.8% from April 2011.  There were 21,436 registered taxable diesel freight vehicles, 0.5% decrease from the same period last year.  The number of hybrid freight vehicles totaled 61 in May 2011.  There were 310 registered taxable electric passenger vehicles or an 82.4% increase from May 2010.

8.        In March 2011, the electric utilities generated 603.5 GWh of electricity or an increase of 0.3% compared to March 2010.  During the same period, electricity generated by steam decreased 1.8%, while that generated by diesel increased by 5.4%.  Electricity generated by the electric utilities’ sources of hydro and wind decreased 32.7%.  Electricity purchased from independent power producers (IPPs) increased 11.4% from the same period last year.  The electricity purchased from the IPPs represented about 35.7% of the electricity sent to the system in March 2011.  HECO generated 2.1 GWh using biodiesel in March 2011.  Year-to-date (January through March 2011), the electric utilities generated 1,706 GWh of electricity, a decrease of 0.1% from the same period a year ago.  Year-to-date purchase of electricity from the IPPS was 957.2 MWh, an increase of 8.1% from the same period in 2010.  Year-to-date electricity generated by hydro and wind by the electric utilities was down 13.2% from last year.

9.        The average cost per barrel of fuel oil consumed by the electric utilities in March 2011 was $94.25, up 11.7% from the average cost a year a ago.  The total fuel oil consumption in March 2011 was 752,339 barrels, down 0.7% when compared to the consumption in March 2010.  The cost of fuel oil per kWh generated in March 2011 was $0.183, up 12.5% compared to the same month a year ago.  Year-to-date (January through March 2011), fuel oil consumption was down 2.5%, while the total cost of fuel oil consumed was up 19.5% and the cost of fuel oil per kWh generated was also up 11.8% compared to the same period a year ago.  The year-to-date average cost of fuel oil per kWh generated was $0.179, an increase of 11.8% from the same period a year ago.

10.        In March 2011, the electric utilities consumed 104,514 barrels of diesel oil, an increase of 7.0% from March 2010.  The average cost per barrel of diesel oil consumed by the electric utilities in March 2011 was $119.57 or up 23.4% from the average price in March 2010.  Overall, year-to-date (January through March 2011) consumption of diesel oil totaled 335,414 barrels, reflecting an increase of 10.1% from the same period last year.  The year–to-date average cost per barrel of diesel oil was $114.91 or an increase of 19.5% from the same period last year.  Overall, the year-to-date total cost of diesel oil consumed totaled $38.5 million or a 31.1% increase from the same period last year.  Also, the year-to-date average cost of diesel oil per KWh generated was $0.175 or a 20.1% increase from last year.

11.        In March 2011, the electric utilities consumed 11,274 barrels of biodiesel with an average cost of $168.52 per barrel while generating 4.4 GWh of electricity.  Year-to-date (January through March 2011), a total of 23,777 barrels of biodiesel oil was consumed at a total cost of $4.5 million.  The year-to-date average cost of biodiesel per kWh generated was $1.016.

12.        In March 2011, total electricity sales by the utilities increased 4.6% from March 2010 and increased 10.3% from February 2011.  Residential electricity sales increased 2.0% from March 2010 and increased 12.9% from February 2011.  Sales to the commercial sector increased 5.7% from March 2010 and increased 9.1% from February 2011.  Year-to-date electricity sales were 2.5 billion kWh, an increase of 3.4% from the same period in 2010.

13.        The total net revenue of the electric utilities in March 2011 totaled $242.2 million reflecting an increase of 18.9% from March 2010.  For March 2011, residential and commercial revenues increased by 16.3% and 20.2%, respectively, from March 2010.  The 2011 year-to-date net revenues was $684.6 million  or an increase of 17.7% from the same period in 2010.  The 2011 year-to-date net revenue for the residential sector total $229.6 million  or up 15.4%, and for the commercial sector, net revenue totaled $451.3 million  or up 18.9% from the same period in 2010.

14.        For March 2011, the average residential retail price was 31.70 cents per kWh, an increase of 14.1% from March 2010 and a 2.1 % increase from February 2011.  The average commercial retail price was 27.15 cents per kWh or an increase of 13.7% from March 2010 and a 2.3% from February 2011.  Year-to-date 2011 average residential retail prices increased to 30.96 cents per kWh, representing a 13.3% increase from the same period in 2010.

15.        The energy cost adjustment factor for electricity effective May 1, 2011 for each of the island was as follows:  Kauai (0.09497 $/kWh); Oahu (0.09891 $/kWh); Maui (0.06573 $/kWh); Lanai (0.11227 $/kWh); Molokai (0.07425 $/kWh); and Hawaii (0.11292 $/kWh).
