Kealakekua Heritage Ranch: A Big Vision on Hawaii's Big Island

Forestry, let alone sustainable forestry, has never been a part of the popular image of the Hawaiian
landscape (there is no Hawaiian Paul Bunyan). On volcanic hillsides above the beaches and reefs however, there are vast forests, and there is serious concern about the loss of these forests. Threats to Hawaiian forests are even more worrisome because Hawai'i is truly unique. It is the most remote archipelago in the world. Ecological diversity and geographic isolation have given rise to plants and animals found no where else. The Hawaiian Islands claim the greatest number of threatened and endangered plant species in the U.S.
