BY LIZ LARSON– Senate Bill 237 sets a dangerous precedent for corruption in the lease of public land. The bill states “Notwithstanding sections 171-13 and 302A-1151, or any other law to the contrary, the department may lease public school land on terms it deems appropriate…”
This means that if Senate Bill 237 passes, the Department of Education (DOE) may ignore the current laws that put the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) in charge of leasing public land.
This is dangerous because the DOE does not have the same rules and safeguards in place that the DLNR does that ensures the decision making process is not prone to corruption.
Essentially, the DOE would have unfettered power to lease any public school land in the state.
On Friday, April 26th, the bill narrowly passed conference committee and will be up for a vote in both the Hawaii State Senate and the Hawaii State House of Representatives this Tuesday, April 30th.
Please contact your local legislators and urge them to vote ‘No’ to Senate Bill 237.
so now Ms. Liz Larson, a Republican will understand that DOE and DLNR are corrupted bureaucracies.and yet she still supports Public government funded "education." voters who vote for people like her …are they stuck on stupid?
I can see leasing of DOE and DLNR land to private interests where it serves a public purpose. For example, something like having a private company handle food service at a lower cost yet maintaining quality (whatever that is now) might be a good thing. But opponents see politicians leasing land to their buddies so they can split income derived from private enterprises that don't benefit the public. The problem here is TRUST; we don't trust our government even though we choose the individuals who comprise it. Our local governments have had such a history of corruption and insider deal-making that the public doesn't trust our elected representatives to be honest and do the right thing versus padding there own and their cohorts pockets with ill-gotten gains. This lack of trust coupled with a lack of demand for change in the way our government works is a reflection on the depth of the ignorance and disaffection of our voting public who year after year votes incompetents and criminals into office.
