Be My Valentine. Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. Let the flowers and chocolates bloom. (A Foodland Sunday ad pictured long stem roses AND "long stem dipped chocolate strawberries" Yum). A Valentine's gift to you from your State Legislature is proposed higher General Excise, Conveyance, Transient Accommodation, Liquor, Tobacco, "sugary beverage" and other taxes.
Let's Get Hitched. Thinking of getting married? The Health Department wants to raise the Hawaii license fee from the current $60 to $100. Who said two can live as cheaply as one?
Lex Brodie Street. I attended the scattering of the ashes off Waikiki of SBH founder and Hawaii's greatest entrepreneur, Lex Brodie, two weeks ago. I have introduced a Resolution in the Legislature to rename a small portion of Coral Street, adjacent to 701 Queen Street, "Lex Brodie Street." What do you say City & State HCDA?
Jessica vs. Canines. Want a crowd and emotion at the Legislature? Introduce and hear bills about dogs. The Senate Judiciary Committee has heard dozens of animal cruelty bills but so far refuses to hear "Jessica's Law," which deals with higher minimum sentences for perps who sexually assault or harm young children.
"Moment of Contemplation." After congratulating the State Senate for returning prayer to its daily floor sessions after a 2 year absence, it turns out it isn't prayer after all. Instead, it is an almost daily "Moment of Contemplation." Apparently, God is still not welcome in the Capitol.

No Fast Food? The Hawaii Kai Burger King is closed for renovations and the Hawaii Kai McDonald's Drive-through is closed for renovations. Hard to get good fast food in Hawaii Kai now.
No Zip in Zippy's? Many loyal Zippy's restaurant patrons have been increasingly noting the slower service at most Zippy's O'ahu locations. Staff shortages?
Best Business Plan. For budding young entrepreneurs who want to develop their own business plan, they can use the model of the US Postal Service. Heavily in debt, the USPS raised prices (46¢ as of last month for "First Class"), are cutting service (Saturday deliveries) but keeping over bloated and expensive manpower. More and more people flee the USPS for cheaper, better on line services and the USPS doesn't know how to compete because it is still a government monopoly.

Hawaiian Ohana. A kapa pattern symbolizing ancestry, family and transportation will mark the turboprop aircraft flown by Hawai'i's newest interisland operation when 'Ohana by Hawaiian inaugurates service to Moloka'i and Lana`i this summer.
The name and brand identity of the new service, as well as the aircraft design by renowned artist and designer Sig Zane and his son Kuha'o, were unveiled at Honolulu International Airport.
"The name 'Ohana perfectly captures the idea behind this service and the role it will play in our community. This new service has always been about making it easier for friends and families throughout the islands and from overseas to share time together," said Mark Dunkerley, President and CEO of Hawaiian Holdings, Inc. and its subsidiary Hawaiian Airlines. Hayden Watt estimates the new service will create "up to100 new Hawai'i-based jobs in various areas of air transportation. "
