Be My Valentine. Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. Let the flowers and chocolates bloom. (A Foodland Sunday ad pictured long stem roses AND “long stem dipped chocolate strawberries” Yum). A Valentine’s gift to you from your State Legislature is proposed higher General Excise, Conveyance, Transient Accommodation, Liquor, Tobacco, “sugary beverage” and other taxes.

Let’s Get Hitched. Thinking of getting married? The Health Department wants to raise the Hawaii license fee from the current $60 to $100. Who said two can live as cheaply as one?

Lex Brodie Street. I attended the scattering of the ashes off Waikiki of SBH founder and Hawaii’s greatest entrepreneur, Lex Brodie, two weeks ago. I have introduced a Resolution in the Legislature to rename a small portion of Coral Street, adjacent to 701 Queen Street, “Lex Brodie Street.” What do you say City & State HCDA?

Jessica vs. Canines. Want a crowd and emotion at the Legislature? Introduce and hear bills about dogs. The Senate Judiciary Committee has heard dozens of animal cruelty bills but so far refuses to hear “Jessica’s Law,” which deals with higher minimum sentences for perps who sexually assault or harm young children.

“Moment of Contemplation.” After congratulating the State Senate for returning prayer to its daily floor sessions after a 2 year absence, it turns out it isn’t prayer after all. Instead, it is an almost daily “Moment of Contemplation.” Apparently, God is still not welcome in the Capitol.

Panos on Board. UH Engineering Professor, rail opponent

and internationally known transportation expert, Dr. Panos Prevedouros, was elected to the voluntary Board of Directors of Smart Business Hawaii on Monday.

No Fast Food? The Hawaii Kai Burger King is closed for renovations and the Hawaii Kai McDonald’s Drive-through is closed for renovations. Hard to get good fast food in Hawaii Kai now.

No Zip in Zippy’s? Many loyal Zippy’s restaurant patrons have been increasingly noting the slower service at most Zippy’s O’ahu locations. Staff shortages?

Best Business Plan. For budding young entrepreneurs who want to develop their own business plan, they can use the model of the US Postal Service. Heavily in debt, the USPS raised prices (46¢ as of last month for “First Class”), are cutting service (Saturday deliveries) but keeping over bloated and expensive manpower. More and more people flee the USPS for cheaper, better on line services and the USPS doesn’t know how to compete because it is still a government monopoly.

State Budget Chief to Speak. State Budget & Finance Director, Kalbert Young, will speak on state finances and

how they affect you at the next SBH Sunrise Networking Breakfast, Thursday, February 28, 7-8:30 am, Pineapple Room, Macy’s Ala Moana Center. Call Darlyn at SBH for info/registration at 396-1724 or go online.

JA Laureates. Hilo-based architect Russell Oda,

Randy Hiraki (Commercial Plumbing, Inc.) and Ralph S. Inouye (Ralph Inouye Co., Ltd.) were elected to the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame. They will be honored Friday, March 8 at the Hale Koa Hotel.

Host Families Needed. Winners Camp Hawaii is preparing for the arrival of their largest group of 120 boys and girls from Hamamatsu Junior High school.  They are seeking families that live anywhere on Oahu.  This group has been visiting Winners Camp for many, many years now.  It’s easy for host families because there is just one pickup and one drop off!

Please open your homes to a few wonderful students.  They are so excited to experience the ALOHA of our special islands.

They’re arriving on Friday, March 1st at 4:30pm.

Pick-up is at Harris Church in Nu’uanu and they’ll be with you over the weekend. Drop-off is on Monday, March 4th between 7:00am and 7:30am at Harris Church.

For brand new host families, the initial application can be reviewed by clicking here.

They need many families – please invite your family and friends to join you in hosting!  You know what kind of family you would want your own kids to stay with, so they will add $50.00 to your stipend for every family you sign up! It’s a win-win for everyone involved!  Please reply asap to Delorese Gregoire by calling 808-306-8008 with  a “Yes, we would love to open our hearts and home for the weekend!

Hawaiian Ohana. A kapa pattern symbolizing ancestry, family and transportation will mark the turboprop aircraft flown by Hawai’i’s newest interisland operation when ‘Ohana by Hawaiian inaugurates service to Moloka’i and Lana`i this summer.

The name and brand identity of the new service, as well as the aircraft design by renowned artist and designer Sig Zane and his son Kuha’o, were unveiled at Honolulu International Airport.

The name ‘Ohana perfectly captures the idea behind this service and the role it will play in our community. This new service has always been about making it easier for friends and families throughout the islands and from overseas to share time together,” said Mark Dunkerley, President and CEO of Hawaiian Holdings, Inc. and its subsidiary Hawaiian Airlines. Hayden Watt estimates the new service will create “up to100 new Hawai’i-based jobs in various areas of air transportation. ”

Steven Tyler-Dressed. Aerosmith rocker, Steven Tyler, accompanied by Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood, both

part time Maui residents, took the State Capitol by storm at a public hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, last Friday. Maui Senator J. Kalani English introduced the “Steven Tyler Act” to provide more privacy to local celebrities. While young girls screeched (and some guys too) at the celebs, hard questions and criticism came from local and national reporters and journalists who saw the original draft an affront to the First Amendment. The bill has been amended and moves on.

Snake Bit. This is the Chinese Year of the Snake. Don’t get bit.

US SBA Awardees. You should attend the 26th Annual Statewide SBA Small Business Awards celebration to be held on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.  The Hawaii District Office is thrilled to introduce the outstanding winners at the Small Business Awards Luncheon, hosted by Hawaii Business Magazine with support from other leading businesses in Hawaii.

Each year, the SBA Small Business Awards honor small business owners and advocates who have been recognized for their exceptional achievements and the many contributions to the local small business community and the economy. Special awards will also be presented to the SBA Lenders of the Year, and the Editors Choice Awards. The 2013 Winners’ Circle, a business expo featuring the products, services, and success strategies of these talented award winners and sponsors, precedes the luncheon, opening as early as 10:30  a.m. in the Coral Ballroom.  The luncheon and presentations will begin at 11:30 that morning.

Additional information on the events and to make individual or table reservations for the awards luncheon is available from Hawaii Business by clicking here.  A list of the winners to be honored is available!
