March on the Capitol to Bring Attention to Loss of University of Hawaii Funding

Student Network for Action in Progress will lead a protest march on Friday from the University of Hawaii-Manoa campus to the state capitol.

The students are critical of Hawaii lawmakers cutting $250 million from the University’s budget over the last five years, which they said caused tuition increases and is pricing the local population of affordable higher education.

Tuition increased 108 percent from 2006 to 2012.

Tuition will rise by 33 percent over the next five years.

To put the university’s numbers in perspective, annual tuition for a general undergraduate student will climb from $4,500 in 2007 to $11,300 in 2016.

Tuition is set by the University of Hawaii Board of Regents.

Some lawmakers are critical of the University administration’s spending on administrators’ salaries, benefits, travel and other perks, which they maintain is partially responsible for tuition hikes.

  1. Its unfortunate that these students completely missed the big picture. For decades the UH Systems has wasted millions of $$ through failed projects and inept administrators, who believed that the legislature would always bail them out. Althought the recent recession impacted many in our state, it did bring to the attention to key legislators just how wasteful the UH has been. Perhaps the next the students undertake should be at the UH asking for more accountability from UH administrators.

      • BTW, best example is MRC Greenwood's antics & greed using UH's funds.
        She & her lover rather live in Waikiki, & taxpayers paid for them to see B. Obama's inauguration & lobby for his library here.
        Now they may get married? BARF!
