Mazie Hirono and Barney Frank: Birds of a Feather

BY DAVID CHANG – Recently we’ve seen some of the most partisan rhetoric in the history of Washington, D.C. in the U.S. Congress. The 88% unfavorable rating of Congress highlights this point.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle have been unable to reach common sense solutions that will put our country back on track.

And, some of the country’s current elected officials, who are now candidates for higher office, are satisfied with the current status quo atmosphere and look to push the partisan rhetoric even further.

Yesterday, Congresswomen Mazie Hirono hosted here in Hawaii, to speak on her behalf, one of the most partisan and out of touch members the U.S. House, Cong. Barney Frank, ‘Mr. Freddie Mae and Freddie Mac’.

You remember his infamous quote: “These two entities – Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – are not facing any kind of financial crisis. The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.”  Is this the type of person we want our leaders to follow and pal around with?

Even fellow Democrat Ed Case weighed in, saying that Frank’s positions are harming the future of our country.

“[Frank’s] and Mazie’s extreme-left fiscal and economic policies and endless partisan warfare are no more the solution for our country than the far right’s,” said Hawaii Democrat candidate for U.S. Senate Ed Case.

Case is not the only Democrat breaking from the ranks of partisan Hirono and Frank.  As an example, 107 democrats rejected the Congressional Progressive Caucus’ budget proposal, including Hawaii’s own Congresswomen Colleen Hanabusa.

As partisan politicians like Mazie Hirono and Barney Frank try to push legislation that hurt the average American, we must turn to leaders who work on our behalf to ensure Hawaii’s residents will be first, last and always in their minds.  Leaders like former-Gov. Linda Lingle, who has the proven record of independent, bipartisan decision making.  As Senator Susan Collins said this week, “The atmosphere in Congress right now has become pretty toxic. Vitriolic rhetoric makes it more difficult to work together. … Moderates like Linda (Lingle) can help us bridge that partisan divide and solve problems rather than just score political points.”

Hawaii deserves better than Rep. Mazie Hirono, who has been and continues to be part of the mess that is in Congress today.

  1. Barney Franks should be serving time in prison
Mazie should be the one with visitation rights, trying to deliver the file inside the cake.
Then upon finding out this illegal tactic, toss her in the slammer too.

  2. Does anyone know how the turn out went?

I find it hard to believe that many here, no matter what their political suasion would turn out to see this arrogant Boston clown whose fecklessness (along with Chris Dodd, also retiring after this term) was largely responsible for the Crash of 2008. But then, we are talking about the left here.

And Mazie…? Is she so clueless? Or is she the Inouye drone we all fear?
