REPORT FROM PACIFIC ROLLER DERBY– Pacific Roller Derby (Pacific) hosts the 5th Annual SK808 Roller Derby Tournament on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Palama Settlement Gymnasium. This live sports event welcomes roller derby athletes, referees, and non-skating officials from the neighbor islands, the mainland, and as far away as Canada and Australia to compete in a friendly mixed-skill level tournament that allows participants the chance to join together for a day of hard-hitting live roller derby action that promotes athleticism, self-confidence, and team building between members of the world-wide roller derby community.

Pacific expects more than 60 registrants to provide a full day of live roller derby at the Palama Settlement Gymnasium. Skaters will be divided into mixed teams by skill-level and bout experience and will quickly adapt to skating with non-familiar faces at this round robin style tournament.

Ivanna S. Pankin, founder of SinCitySkates.com and the coordinator for the annual RollerCon derby convention in Las Vegas says “SK808 is the derby event I look forward to all year long. We have such a great time skating in paradise with skaters from all over the world, in a low-stress, high-competition environment that restores my love for the sport and makes my year. I haven’t missed one yet, and I hope I never do.”

For many skaters, the SK808 Tournament will be a continuation of on-skates training time here on Oahu. Many of these amateur athletes plan to attend the Team Awesome Oahu Training Camp, coordinated by Ivanna S. Pankin, in a peer-to-peer coached roller derby clinic led by nationally known veterans from the derby community, held prior to SK808.

Doors for the 5th Annual SK808 Roller Derby Tournament open to the public at 12pm on Saturday, January 19, with numerous bouts between 12:30pm and 7pm. General Admission is $10 at the door; kids under age 12 are free. Parking is available behind the gym on a first come first serve basis, with additional parking available in the neighborhood areas surrounding the Palama Settlement Campus. Please note, no alcohol is allowed on the premises, and no food and beverage are allowed inside the gym. Snacks and more will be available for purchase outside on the lanai, with all funds supporting Pacific Roller Derby’s 2013 Season. Pacific wishes to thank SinCitySkates.com, Camp Awesome, and Team Lally Real Estate for supporting SK808, as well as Francine Walraven, of Maui, for designing this year’s event logo.
