BY CONGRESSWOMAN ELECT TULSI GABBARD – I want to send my warmest and heartfelt aloha to all of you today, wishing you a Happy Christmas and Happy Holidays.

The loss of our great warrior, Senator Daniel Inouye, makes Christmas in Hawai`i much more somber this year. Attending his memorial service at Punchbowl National Cemetery on Sunday was very emotional and historic.  US Senator Jon Tester played “Taps” to honor our hero.  President Obama and Michelle sat in the front row between Irene Inouye and Ken Inouye.  Senator Akaka spoke endearingly about his brother, Dan Inouye, and shared some personal stories of their time serving together.

He was truly an American hero. He sacrificed in battle, broke down barriers of prejudice and dedicated his life to our State from its first days in the Union. The fact that Senator Inouye’s last word was “Aloha” speaks volumes.

Like you, I have spent much of the past week reflecting on the Senator’s profound legacy and lifelong commitment to service.  In this reflection, we are all reminded of the many blessings we have in our lives, and that we should not take those blessings for granted.

In this spirit of aloha, I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.  I want you to know how grateful I am for you, and how privileged I am to serve you.

Mahalo nui loa,

Tulsi

  1. Mr. Inouye was a great American and sacrificed much for this country and this State. However, there is one thing that has not been said and that is Mr. Inouye was one of the biggest spending people in congress and he and people like him are what has caused the irreparible economic damage to this country. A debt so great that it is going to go down in history as the debt that demolished the world economy. The United States of America and Hawaii are bankrupt. Once we become insolvent it is over and that day is just around the corner. We can thank Mr. Inouye and people like him for the demise of this great country.
