Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Becomes One of the First Female Combat Veterans in Congress

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is sworn into office on January 2, 2013

Washington, DC – Joined by many supporters, friends, and colleagues, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) made history today when she was sworn in as one of the first female combat veterans ever to serve in the U.S. Congress.

“Today is a significant historic moment for the many brave, selfless women who have served, and continue to serve, in our armed forces,” said Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. “Never before has this incredible group of heroes had a voice and representation in Congress. I look forward to working with my colleagues to find solutions to the challenges facing our veterans, service members, and the all of our hard-working middle-class families in Hawai'i.”

Congresswoman Gabbard joins Tammy Duckworth (IL-08), a fellow combat veteran, as the first female combat veterans in Congress. Together, they represent a constituency of more than 1.8 million women veterans, who make up nearly 20 percent of nation's armed forces.
