Expensive to Dine With Abercrombie. Governor Neil Abercrombie is on the campaign trail. Just back from New York where he was the recipient of a $1,000 a plate fundraiser-the Governor said he was going to Washington, D.C. to straighten out the Congress during its standoff with his pal President Obama- but clearly he had other objectives. Next, our Gov journeyed to Indian Creek Island, Florida for a $2,000-$6,000 a plate soiree. The village is unique among similar-sized communities in having its own State of Florida sworn police force including its own 24/7 armed boat patrol around the island. Indian Creek Village is one of the most protected and secure incorporated municipalities in the United States.

Good Principal, Bad Principal. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Jeffrey Piontek, former principal of Hawaii Technology Academy, in Santa Monica, for allegedly stealing and laundering $100,000 in school funds. More on Solar.  After our story last week on HECO and PV solar, this message was received from a reader: “Aloha, I wanted to let you know that the Board of Electricians and Plumbers held a meeting on Oct 15 to determine whether all solar PV installation can only be done by C-13 journey worker electricians rather than C-60 solar installers. PV testifiers showed that technology has evolved and now you can basically plug panels in like a refrigerator. Hook up to circuit box is still done by C-13. An unnecessary change in rules will impact the entire solar and construction industry in general, cost many people their jobs, and significantly increase costs to consumers. Decision deferred to Nov. 5 meeting. There was no media in attendance but thought this is media worthy. Thanks.” I think so, too. Mahalo for keeping us informed.

“Cabaret” at DHT. The production of “Cabaret” at the Diamond Head Theatre by all accounts was very successful with topnotch acting, staging and music. The original play run was extended through last Sunday. It was timely, and many wonder if planned at this time, to further coincide with the upcoming Legislative Special Session and full court press for same sex marriage. “Cabaret” is rich in homosexual overtones and scenes. Nontheless, the story-about what happens in a country when good people do nothing about emerging authoritarianism- and the acting, deserve kudos. Intolerance of any kind is not a welcome attribute; but there must be room for unbridled free speech, differing opinion and religious liberty.

Special Session Coming. Hawaii’s not-so-special same sex marriage Special Session begins at 10 am next Monday, October 28. It is expected to last 5 working days. The Senate will also consider several departmental and judicial interim nominees.
