Calvin Say Re-Elected Speaker of the House

BY JIM DOOLEY – Calvin Say is once again the speaker of the state House of Representatives.

After weeks of negotiations with a bloc of dissident Democrats, Say was voted back in unanimously shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Legislature opened earlier in the day with leadership questions unresolved.

Say thanked his colleagues for what he called “your vote of support and confidence.”

He read a lengthy quotation from President Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address, which ends with the line: “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds.”

Say then told the representatives, “We are all here for the greater good of serving the Lord and the people of Hawaii.”
