REPORT FROM US SENATOR BRIAN SCHATZ – Today, U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D- Hawai‘i) announced that Meaghan Smith will join his staff as Communications Director. Roz Makaula will serve as Hawai‘i-based Press Secretary.
“One of my most important jobs is sharing my work in the Senate with the people of Hawai‘i, and I am glad to have Meaghan and Roz on my team to help with that,” said U.S. Senator Brian Schatz. “Meaghan has family roots in Hawai‘i and has gained expertise on economic issues at the Senate Finance Committee that are important to working families at home. We are also pleased to welcome Roz Makaula to our Honolulu office. Roz has worked in communications for years and has a background in print, radio and television. Meaghan and Roz are talented and experienced professionals who will be valuable additions to our team.”
Smith has worked on Capitol Hill for seven years, most recently serving as Deputy Communications Director for the U.S. Senate Finance Committee. She has also worked in communications for two members of the U.S. House and on campaigns in Missouri. As Communications Director, Smith will oversee the operations of the press office and advise Senator Schatz on communications strategy. Smith’s family is based on Oahu. She is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis.
Makaula, most recently worked as Communication Administrator for The Queen’s Medical Center’s Oncology Services. She has also served as Division Manager of Constituent Services for the State of Hawaii’s Executive Branch and is the former Executive Director for the American Cancer Society’s Honolulu Office. In 2012, Makaula was named American Savings Bank Community Leader of the Year. She will be responsible for state media relations and assisting with overall communications strategy. She is a graduate of Chaminade University of Honolulu.
