Society of Professional Journalists Recognizes The Honolulu Advertiser, Maui News and Hawaii Reporter for Investigative Reporting

The Society of Professional Journalists, Hawaii Chapter, issued dozens of awards to local television, radio, print and online media at its 2006 Excellence in Journalism Awards dinner on Friday, June 29.

Reporters, editors, photographers and page designers were recognized for everything from best documentary and investigative news reports in the television division, to best feature reporting in radio, to best layout and public service reporting in the print division.

The Investigative Reporting award in the ‘open print’ division, is the second highest award for print journalists, and is open to all print media including magazines, weekly newspapers, online journals and daily newspapers.

”’The Honolulu Advertiser”’ reporter Rob Perez took the top award in this division for his piece on Tripler Army Medical Center.

Both the ”’Maui News”’ and ”’Hawaii Reporter”’ were finalists in this division.

”’Maui News”’ Reporter Ilima Loomis was honored for her story on the Maui Air Ambulance.

”’Hawaii Reporter”’ was awarded for its series on the March 14, 2006, Ka Loko Dam breach, which was also used in an ABC 20/20 report in March 2007.

”’Hawaii Reporter”’ also was a finalist in the Online General News Reporting division for its Ka Loko Dam series.

”’The Honolulu Star-Bulletin”’, which took 10 top awards for everything from photography to editorials, lists all media winners here:
