The U.S. Constitution - A Gift from America's Founding Fathers That Keeps on Giving
By Earl Arakaki, 12/13/2005 3:11:23 PM

A few weeks ago some friends gave me a pocket-sized pamphlet of the “Declaration of Independence,” the “Constitution of the United States of America,” and “Amendments to the Constitution of the United States of America.” Upon reading it, I discovered, “The first 10 amendments to the Constitution -- the Bill of Rights -- were ratified effective December 15, 1791.”

This week, Thursday, December 15, 2005, is the anniversary of the “Bill of Rights.” The Constitution was ratified in 1787, and the Bill of Rights four years later. Always believed individual rights were in place from day one, or thereabouts.

Obviously, early leaders were highly motivated to continue working on to strive and document individual rights. These founders did not simply go back to the farm, or go about their businesses after ratifying the Constitution in 1787. They worked an additional four more years. As Martha would say, “its a good thing.”

Decades later, as Hawaii became a territory, and later the 50th State, all citizens and their descendants inherited the fruits of their labor. Sure, their was legalized discrimination over the decades. The system isn’t perfect as generations dealt with human frailties of the seven deadly sins. However, the “Bill of Rights” is better than whatever is in second place.

We all benefitted by the founders motivations: Wanting to be individually free from too much government controls over individual lives. Free to communicate via print newspapers, handbills, signs, posters, and now cyberspace. Free to rally wearing whatever color or print message desired on clothing. Free to peaceably march, even to the extent of carrying placards and signs in support of laws/policies which clearly endorsed violating rights of other citizens. I.e. KKK

Individually free from living under an oppressive monarch. Never having to bow or prostrate to no man or woman. A nation of laws, not a nation of men, or women.

Free to attend or not attend church, nor to kneel before idols, nor worship ancient gods.

Free to chose to carry cultural spears/weapons during demonstrations and marches. Privately own, keep, and “bear Arms.”

Freedom as individual citizens with rights to own private property. Freedom from want. Not having to want and wait to be called from a government agency's list to buy a home, which ultimately you will never own in fee, or bequeath to a loved one of your choice without concern for race. Free from the behest and whim of a land overseer.

Freedom to have a fair trial, judged by his/her peers. Not life hinging on the whim of a lone king, queen, or dictator’s decision.

Lately, these rights are being undermined in Hawaii and nationwide by politicians, endorsed by citizens, some well-intentioned, some motivated by the sins of pride, envy, anger and greed.

Rights being violated? Protect it. Laws/Rights not enforced are useless. Use it, or lose it.

Ratified, 214 years ago on December 15th, 10 days before Christmas. No need for any other Christmas presents. Truly a gift that keeps on giving. Merry Christmas.
