Why Mufi Hannemann Should Be Honolulu’s Next Mayor
By Michelle Kidani, 9/12/2004 11:55:25 PM

Abraham Lincoln said "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."

I served as a political appointee for more than 12 years on the Honolulu City Council. It was during this time that I came to know Mufi very well. I have always known Mufi to be an outstanding public servant who has never, ever abused the power entrusted to him by his constituents. As Chair of the Honolulu City Council, Mufi made decisions based on integrity even when he knew that his acts of integrity would be unpopular with his colleagues. Mufi did it because it was the right thing to do. Given the chance to stand up for ‘honest government’, Mufi walked the talk and had the leadership ability to stand by the decisions he made. Mufi did not bow to pressures or threats. Mufi could have made deals with administration as others did to assure their pet projects would get preferred treatment. Rather, Mufi showed his independence and sound judgement. He proved he was not obliged to anyone nor tied to any promises. This is the character and integrity of a true leader.

Our next Mayor of Honolulu should be a proven leader with experience who will put forth their best efforts for the betterment of Honolulu. I believe such a leader should have the character, the integrity and the guts to do the right thing. I believe the citizens of Honolulu want a leader who will walk the talk—even when it’s not the popular thing to do. A leader who will do the right thing ---- even when no one is looking. A leader who does selfless acts for the good of the community even when it’s not an election year.

I can rest assured because I know that Mufi Hannemann is this leader. Honolulu, you have a choice--why not choose the best?

On Saturday, September 18th, the next Mayor of Honolulu could be elected if any candidate has one vote over 50 percent of the votes cast. Please go to Mufi’s webpage votemufi.com for more details on his experience and vision for Honolulu.

Michelle Kidani is a former Honolulu City Council Senior Advisor.
