Leftist Michael Moore: Enemy of the Worker - Part 1
By Stuart K. Hayashi, 3/25/2002 2:30:30 AM

Unless you’re a college student or a political activist, you’ve probably never heard of anti-capitalist filmmaker Michael Moore. But since his new book, “Stupid White Men,” now ranks as the #1 bestseller on the New York Times list and #3 at Amazon.com, it might be about time that those in the business world learn more about whom he is and what he’s up to.

His crusade against private enterprise won’t wreck your company today or tomorrow, but, as long as his influence continues to grow, he just might ruin you in the future if he ever gets his way.

Moore, himself a successful entrepreneur in the movie business, is the maker of intentionally humorous propaganda “documentaries,” like the feature-length “Roger & Me,” as well as the cable program “Awful Truth.” Aside from university professors and their pupils, hardly anyone is aware of their existence, though they have received critical acclaim.

Moore even made a cameo as himself in a late ‘90’s film by 2002 “Best Director” Oscar winner Ron Howard. That’s how prestigious he is.

None of the films produced by Moore himself are meant to be pure entertainment, however. Making the viewers laugh is their secondary purpose.

What’s most relevant about them is that they drive home the message that free markets and corporations are unconditionally evil and that they enslave the entire globe. He also adds that private ownership of firearms must be curtailed.

Throughout this whole endeavor, Moore attempts to disguise himself as a friend of the working man. Despite his riches, he continues to dress in a windbreaker, a plaid shirt and a baseball cap.

He tells others of how he grew up in a blue-collar family and that he worked in a Buick factory, although the “awful truth” is that it was only for one day, and he sends his own teenage daughter to an elitist private school (which is his right, of course). More importantly, he condemns corporations for mistreating their workers.

I applauded Moore when he employed his usual obnoxious antics in order to intimidate the HMO Humana into giving one of its clients the life-saving liver transplant that it had initially denied him. By staging a mock funeral for the man, which embarrassed Humana, he utilized pure economic leverage to pressure the company into behaving decently.

In other words, Moore saved the day, not through using the government regulations he loves, but mechanisms of the very market he verbally smears.

I also concurred with Moore for chastising the Pillsbury company for using tax dollars for its overseas advertising. I believe it should use its own money.

But Moore isn’t opposed to corporate welfare, but corporations per se. And, if he ever got his way, it would lead, not to a world where companies treated their employees fairly, but in which the free market was completely annihilated. That would create a harsher life for the proletariat.

For instance, Moore advocates a 70 percent income tax. Now, would that benefit or harm the working class, whom, by Moore’s own estimate, don’t receive enough of a “living wage” as it is? Wouldn’t Moore’s draconian tax severely decrease their budgets?

Even if such a ludicrous tax were imposed only upon the wealthiest Americans, that still would have an adverse effect on the working class. After all, they’re the ones paid to physically manufacture most of what the rich spend their money on.

If the taxes were high enough to prevent the rich from purchasing those offensively opulent yachts of theirs, which would drive the yacht-builders of Massachusetts out of business, resulting in greater unemployment (which Moore allegedly doesn’t want).
