Hawaii Workshop on Web Site Design: How It Looks vs. How It Works
By Alcian Clegg, 6/9/2008 8:21:05 AM

Did you know that statistically only 11% of the people who visit your website will go beyoud the first screen? In fact, the average time spent on your homepage will be 15 seconds* That's how long you have to convince a prospect to explore your website and consider your goods or services. Your web site also functions as your online representative; its open 24/7 and it provides an introduction to your products and services.

It's easy to see that the design of your home page is just as important as merely having a website. A well designed web site is like peeling an onion. It keeps people from wading through information that doesn't interest them and quickly directs them to the facts that they want. In this seminar, professional web developer Monica Flores will show you how to keep your website from merely being an on-line brochure. She will explore subjects such as:

How important are pictures?

How many buttons are too many? How many are too few?

How often should you refresh your copy?

How do you keep your content engaging and "sticky?"

How your Content Management System (CMS) allows you to control your page content through items like a calendar of events, e-mail subscriber list, or product inventory.

When are plug-ins appropriate and when are they distracting?

Flash vs. and open HTML format.

Joining Monica Flores will be artist Michelle Henry, owner of Tea at 1024. Together they will demonstrate Michelle's web site and discuss what works and what doesn't in a self-designed web site. You'll also walk away with a step-by-step worksheet on how to get started with your web presence.

This workshop is a perfect companion to our seminar "Your Business Needs a Web Site! What you need and how to get it done without breaking the bank." In fact, we feel so strongly about the synergy of graphic design working with the SEO (search engine optimization) considerations that we have created a special package price - take one seminar and get the companion seminar at half price!

Monica Flores and her partner Genesis Lodise have been doing webdesign since 1999. Originally working as 10k Webdesign in California, the couple moved to Moloka'i with their 5-year-old in 2007 and founded Moloka'i Webdesign. The company creates between 50 and 70 websites a year for clients in both Hawai'i and across the mainland for clients as diverse as The Spark Investment Fund, Kawela Plantation Association, Asian Pacific American Heritage Celebration, Bridge for Africa, Kilohana School, Blue Frog Productions, Las Trampas support for adults with developmental disabilities, artist Linda Vredeveld, and Molokai Tonewoods.
