I am writing in response and with corrections to Garry Smith’s March 8, 2007 editorial “No Wimps”. I can appreciate criticism. Criticism, if accurate, can identify areas for improvement.
First, there are Hawaiian based charter schools and my children do not attend one. I am a strong supporter of public charter schools and my children attend Voyager charter school. These schools offer innovative approaches to public education. Local and national Republicans are strong supporters of public charter schools and their role in improving education choice, innovation, and accountability in America.
Secondly, the Rick Hamada show did not offer me a weekly show. We were attempting to get on his show and there was miscommunication on our part. My office staff and I apologized and made several attempts to rectify the situation.
Thirdly, leadership comes in different shapes, sizes, and styles. I do have a different leadership style. I do not and will not put a “Republican spin” on things. I vowed to myself and my family when we decided that I would run for office that I would resist putting politics before what was right.
In 1998 when Linda Lingle lost, I did not identify myself as a Republican. I identified myself as a person with Republican values. I could not relate to Democrats and felt Republicans could not relate to me. Governor Lingle and many others dispelled that perception.
I believe that local Republican values are a balance of compassion and personal responsibility, are fiscally economical, and embrace Hawaii’s history, culture, and people. The Manapua Man, McDonald trays for body surfing, using “bumbai”, and calling everyone aunty or uncle, are cherished memories of being raised in Hawaii. This is who I am. I believe that this is relevant.
Finally, I agree that I need to be more effective at communicating what Hawaii Republicans stand for. Currently, less than one out of every 10 attempts for media is successful for us. We created our own and would like to invite the public to view a new show on ‘Olelo called “Right from the House”. We are also developing a website and podcast.
I am on a mission to improve life in Hawaii through a real and sustainable two-party government. It can only be done when voters can relate and admit to being a Hawaii Republican. I urge the people of Hawaii to join us.
