No Legal or Illegal Lodging Businesses in Our Oahu Neighborhoods
Open Letter to Council Member Charles Djou
By Phil Sharp, 11/13/2008 8:11:00 AM

I strongly oppose resolution 08-256. I do not want illegal or more legal lodging businesses in our neighborhoods.

Councilman, you and your representative, on Thursday night, November 6th, attended the Kuliouou-Kalani Iki Neighborhood Board #2 at which time we expressed our displeasure with the council's lack of support of the Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) in their efforts to control the situation.

The statement made by both you and your representative was an allegation that the DPP was inefficient and had not been doing their job and had issued no citations. It was pointed out to you that this was, and still is, a fabrication made up by you, your representative and the City Council so that you can do two things:

First, legitimatize the wrong doers so that more money can come into the city's coffers in fees.

Second, create more bureaucracy that will deplete yet more funds from an already strapped city budget.

Further, your proposal means that all actions will be deferred until a charter amendment can be placed on the next ballot, two years hence. Very sorry, the action that is needed is NOW!

If the city council is hell bent on spending more tax payers' money, then please augment the DPP's staff with a minimum of three more members that would go after these mini hotels and shut them down.

I am outraged Mr. Djou at your seeming lack of awareness of the problem, its simple solution, and the voice of the people, throughout the island that is in direct contradiction to your actions.

Whatever your agenda is, hidden or otherwise, in regards to the vacation rentals, YOU do not represent the voice of your constituents and are operating on your own.
