America’s 50th State has always been known for its friendly and welcoming “Spirit of Aloha.” But for the last decade or so, Hawaii has begun to earn a reputation for something else entirely: the nation’s most divisive racial politics. And with the proposed “Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act” (known as the Akaka bill) currently pending before the U.S. Senate, it may only get worse. A prelimnary vote is scheduled for Sept. 6, 2005.
