BY HONOLULU CITY COUNCIL MEMBER KIMBERLY PINE – Increased fireworks restrictions have changed the way many O‘ahu residents celebrate some of our most important cultural and religious holidays.

The City Council will consider Bill 5 (2014), which would expand fireworks permits to allow the public to purchase fountain and sparkler fireworks for use on New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year’s Day and during Independence Day.

During our January City Council meeting, supporters testified that Bill 5 is a reasonable step to give O‘ahu residents more freedom in how they can celebrate these important cultural and religious holidays.

Opponents believe the current fireworks ban is important for maintaining the health and safety of the public during these celebrations, and have noted that air quality is noticeably cleaner since the ban was implemented.

What is your position on this important matter?
