    President Addresses Nation on Space Shuttle Columbia Tragedy

    My fellow Americans, this day has brought terrible news and great sadness to our country. At 9:00 a.m. this morning, Mission Control in Houston lost contact with our Space Shuttle Columbia. A short time later, debris was seen falling from the skies above Texas. The Columbia is lost; there are no survivors.

    On board was a crew of seven: Colonel Rick Husband; Lt. Colonel Michael Anderson; Commander Laurel Clark; Captain David Brown; Commander William McCool; Dr. Kalpana Chawla; and Ilan Ramon, a Colonel in the Israeli Air Force. These men and women assumed great risk in the service to all humanity.

    In an age when space flight has come to seem almost routine, it is easy to overlook the dangers of travel by rocket, and the difficulties of navigating the fierce outer atmosphere of the Earth. These astronauts knew the dangers, and they faced them willingly, knowing they had a high and noble purpose in life. Because of their courage and daring and idealism, we will miss them all the more.

    All Americans today are thinking, as well, of the families of these men and women who have been given this sudden shock and grief. You’re not alone. Our entire nation grieves with you. And those you loved will always have the respect and gratitude of this country.

    The cause in which they died will continue. Mankind is led into the darkness beyond our world by the inspiration of discovery and the longing to understand. Our journey into space will go on.

    In the skies today we saw destruction and tragedy. Yet farther than we can see there is comfort and hope. In the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Lift your eyes and look to the heavens. Who created all these? He who brings out the starry hosts one by one and calls them each by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.”

    The same Creator who names the stars also knows the names of the seven souls we mourn today. The crew of the shuttle Columbia did not return safely to Earth; yet we can pray that all are safely home.

    May God bless the grieving families, and may God continue to bless America.

    Columbia Crew Bio: David Brown

    David M. Brown, 46, a mission specialist aboard the shuttle Columbia, was a captain in the U.S. Navy.

    He was a flight surgeon chosen for pilot training in 1988 and designated a naval aviator in 1990. He had logged over 2,700 flight hours with 1,700 in high performance military aircraft including the F-18 Hornet and T-38 Talon.

    Selected by NASA in April 1996, Brown completed two years of training and was eligible for flight assignment as a mission specialist.

    Initially assigned to support payload development for the International Space Station, he was assigned to the astronaut support team responsible for orbiter cockpit setup, crew strap-in, and landing recovery.

    Prior to the Columbia launch, Brown recounted how earlier astronauts had advised to “not forgot to look out the window.”

    “When you look out the window, you’re not looking at the stars or the moon. You’re looking at the Earth,” he said. “When you look at the Earth, invariably people say that they think about people.”

    Brown joined the Navy after his internship at the Medical University of South Carolina and completed flight surgeon training in 1984.

    In 1982, he earned a doctorate in medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School. Earlier, he earned a bachelor’s degree of science in biology from the College of William and Mary in 1978.

    A collegiate varsity gymnast, Brown performed in the Circus Kingdom as an acrobat, 7-foot unicyclist and stilt walker while in college.

    Born in Arlington, Va., Brown graduated from Yorktown High School and his parents, Paul and Dorothy Brown still reside in the area. Brown was single.

    Past president of the International Association of Military Flight Surgeon Pilots, Brown was an associate fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association and a member of the Society of U.S. Naval Flight Surgeons.

    Brown was awarded the Navy Operational Flight Surgeon of the Year in 1986, the Meritorious Service Medal and Navy Achievement Medal.

    Shuttle and Crew Lost

    CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Feb. 1 (UPI) — Space shuttle Columbia and its seven-member crew, including Israel’s first astronaut Ilan Ramon, were lost as the shuttle broke up upon return to Earth Saturday following a 16-day space research mission.

    The last radio call to the crew was a report from Mission Control about a shuttle tire pressure warning.

    Observers in Texas who could see the shuttle as it flew overhead enroute to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida reported debris falling from the sky.

    “It looked just like the Mir breakup,” said Stephen Clark, a contributor to spaceflightnow.com.

    Ground control teams in Houston lost tracking and radio contact with the shuttle at 9 a.m. ET. The spaceship was soaring at about 12,500 mph at an altitude of about 203,000 feet over north Central Texas when communications ceased.

    Search and rescue teams were alerted in Texas and residents were warned not to touch any debris, which could contain toxic substances, as the shuttle carries hazardous propellants and fuels.

    President George W. Bush was briefed at the presidential retreat in Camp David, Md., and was preparing to convene domestic and military committees that may be involved in the shuttle emergency.

    A White House official, speaking on background, said there was no reason to believe the shuttle breakup was anything other than an accident. “There is no reason to believe there are any links to terrorism, but we are fully investigating,” the official said.

    Wary of becoming a target for terrorists, Columbia lifted off on Jan. 16 under tight security. NASA said it took no additional security steps in light of the inclusion of an Israeli aboard the shuttle. Enhanced security was implemented following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States.

    NASA mission control teams secured their flight notes and telemetry data in anticipation of an thorough investigation into the cause of the shuttle’s demise.

    Police and witnesses said the debris appeared to be in a line from Dallas southeast to the Louisiana border.

    Don Archer of Waco told NBC News he was videotaping the shuttle as it streaked overhead:

    “It disappeared and seemed like it started breaking up. There was additional fire and smoke hanging in the sky. I didn’t hear anything because I was concentrating on taking the video.”

    The mood was somber and anxious in Israel, where residents all over the country had tuned in as the Sabbath ended to watch live the landing of Israel’s first and highly popular astronaut. President Ariel Sharon released a statement that said: “The state of Israel and its citizens are standing at this difficult hour at the sides of the astronauts’ families, the Ramon family, the American people and its government in a prayer to the almighty.”

    A former Israeli air force commander, Avihu Binnun, declared, “The cooperation with the United States in space does not depend on one failure. There can always be failures. We come from an area where accidents happen and friends fall, and we know to continue living.”

    In addition to Ramon, the crew included commander Rick Husband, pilot Willie McCool, flight engineer Kalpana Chawla, payload commander Michael Anderson and astronauts David Brown and Laurel Clark. Ramon, McCool, Brown and Clark were making their debut missions. Husband, Chawla and Anderson each had made one previous spaceflight.

    The mission was the first of six planned for this year, with the remainder of the flights devoted to space station assembly.

    The loss of the shuttle and the crew comes 17 years after the Challenger accident on Jan. 28, 1986, which claimed the lives of seven astronauts, including teacher in space Christa McAuliffe. The woman who trained alongside McAuliffe and served as her backup was to fly on Columbia’s next mission this November.

    The accident follows by 36 years the first fatal U.S. space program accident. On Jan. 27, 1967, three astronauts were killed in a flash fire during a test of the Apollo I space capsule. Killed were Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Edward H. White and Roger B. Chaffee.

    NASA has never lost a crew during landing, though a similar tragedy occurred in the Russian space program in 1971 when a returning Salyut space station crew died in a Soyuz capsule that depressurized during its return to Earth.

    There has been no determination on what caused Columbia to fall from the sky. Video taken during the shuttle’s launch showed what appeared to be a piece of foam insulation falling from Columbia’s fuel tank and striking the orbiter’s left wing near its leading edge.

    Flight Director Leroy Cain said during a press conference on Friday engineers had studied the situation and had no concerns as they prepared for the landing.

    “We haven’t changed anything with respect to our (landing) trajectory design. It will be a nominal, standard trajectory,” Cain said.

    Opposing the Native Hawaiian Recognition Bill

    The Hawaii civil rights group Aloha For All has created an online petition for people wanting to oppose the Native Hawaiian Recognition bill.

    That bill in Congress would recognize all people with a drop of ethnic Hawaiian ancestry as being an Indian tribe.

    The purpose is to allow that racial minority to set up a government just for itself, and to protect over 160 racial entitlement programs now operating in Hawaii.

    Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians oppose this legislation, because it would carve up Hawaii along racial lines.

    We want to preserve our beautiful rainbow and not rip it apart. We oppose racial separatism and ethnic nationalism. The petition can be read and signed at https://www.petitiononline.com/Aloha4HI/petition.html

    Gov. Lingle will be going to Washington D.C. around Feb. 19 to lobby Congress and the Bush administration to support this bill. She will try to say the bill is not about race, but rather is about self-determination for indigenous people, and to make right some historical wrongs.

    ”King of Regulation Legislation With Big Bucks in Campaign Contributions Wants Mo’ Money, Less Regulations for Him”

    It is truly ironic. The Senator most known for his desire to regulate Hawaii residents — even down to the way they cross the street (he authored a bill that demands pedestrians make eye contact with any driver near a crosswalk before crossing) — now wants to loosen regulations restricting his own personal political fundraising ability.

    Sen. Cal Kawamoto, D-Waipahu, who typically has the most money of any state senator in his campaign war chest, apparently wants to make it easier to get more money from more people for his campaign. Or so it seems from reading his transparent bill — SB 459. Though he writes the bill as if he is tightening campaign contribution restrictions, the reality is the bill does quite the opposite and in fact creates gigantic loopholes in Hawaii’s campaign spending law where there were none before.

    Kawamoto, who diluted and tried to kill legislation last year that could have impacted his fundraising capabilities because it prevented those who assign state contracts from receiving campaign donations from contractors with state business, is the lead introducer of the bill. However, following close behind Kawamoto are Sen. Norman Sakamoto, D-Moanalua, and Sen. Willie Espero, D- Ewa, who co-signed the legislation.

    ”Highlights of Kawamoto’s proposed legislation:”

    *He wants to “limit” the aggregate contributions by any person or entity to not more than $25,000 in any calendar year (right now for state Senators the maximum amount by any person is $4,000 per campaign cycle);

    *He wants to repeal the requirement that contributions from separate entities be treated as a contribution from a single entity if one entity finances or controls the activities of another contributing entity. (This is what many company owners are doing to make larger contributions to candidates –

    ”King of Regulation Legislation With Big Bucks in Campaign Contributions Wants Mo’ Money, Less Regulations for Him”

    It is truly ironic. The Senator most known for his desire to regulate Hawaii residents — even down to the way they cross the street (he authored a bill that demands pedestrians make eye contact with any driver near a crosswalk before crossing) — now wants to loosen regulations restricting his own personal political fundraising ability.

    Sen. Cal Kawamoto, D-Waipahu, who typically has the most money of any state senator in his campaign war chest, apparently wants to make it easier to get more money from more people for his campaign. Or so it seems from reading his transparent bill — SB 459. Though he writes the bill as if he is tightening campaign contribution restrictions, the reality is the bill does quite the opposite and in fact creates gigantic loopholes in Hawaii’s campaign spending law where there were none before.

    Kawamoto, who diluted and tried to kill legislation last year that could have impacted his fundraising capabilities because it prevented those who assign state contracts from receiving campaign donations from contractors with state business, is the lead introducer of the bill. However, following close behind Kawamoto are Sen. Norman Sakamoto, D-Moanalua, and Sen. Willie Espero, D- Ewa, who co-signed the legislation.

    ”Highlights of Kawamoto’s proposed legislation:”

    *He wants to “limit” the aggregate contributions by any person or entity to not more than $25,000 in any calendar year (right now for state Senators the maximum amount by any person is $4,000 per campaign cycle);

    *He wants to repeal the requirement that contributions from separate entities be treated as a contribution from a single entity if one entity finances or controls the activities of another contributing entity.
