Federal Transit Officials Meets With Hawaii Transportation Experts Concerned About the Proposed Honolulu Rail

Dr. Panos Prevedouros, Professor of Traffic Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Hawaii, and also President, Hawaii Highway Users Alliance, and Cliff Slater, Chair of Honolulutraffic.com, are in Washington, DC, meeting with key U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) officials this week.

On Tuesday, Slater and Prevedouros met with Mr. David Horner, Chief Counsel, Federal Transit Administration (FTA), and Mr. Tyler Duvall, Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy, USDOT, to discuss their concerns with the current state of the environmental process for the Honolulu High Capacity Transit Corridor project.

They discussed the recent changes in USDOT policy that call for reduction in traffic congestion as a primary objective. They also offered their view of how a Virtual Exclusive Busway, a HOT lanes facility giving priority to buses and other high-occupancy vehicles, might relieve Honolulu
