The Friends of the University of Hawaii Cancer Center, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the efforts of the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center, hosted their annual fundraising event on November 18 at the private Diamond Head home of Priscilla and Jim Growney. The event, chaired by Priscilla Growney and Mary Worrall, raised nearly $100,000 to benefit research and educational programs at the UH Cancer Center.
The night’s theme was “Gala Italia.” The event featured an array of gourmet food and wine from Italy. The festive evening under the stars featured live music by Max Solmsson and the South Shore String Quintet, and tours of the Growney’s contemporary art collection. More than 100 guests came from across the state to attend the dinner event. Platinum sponsors included The Queen’s Medical Center, Hawaiʻi Pacific Health, First Hawaiian Bank, and Kobayashi Group.
“We are lucky to have such great supporters and people who believe in the work that we do at the UH Cancer Center. We are dedicated to making Hawaiʻi a place where fewer people get cancer and more people survive. Though the generous support of the Friends, they are helping us make that dream a reality,” said Dr. Michele Carbone, director of the UH Cancer Center.
Construction is under way on a new state-of-the-art research center to better serve the people of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. The new UH Cancer Center will open its doors in 2013.
The University of Hawaii Cancer Center is one of 66 research institutions designated by the National Cancer Institute. Affiliated with the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, the Center is dedicated to eliminating cancer through research, education, and improved patient care.
