At least 708 people have died as a result of the powerful earthquake that struck southern Chile in the early hours of Saturday morning, Chile’s President Michele Bachelet said Sunday.

The latest toll is a significant jump from around 300 deaths reported by the government earlier Sunday. The president said there had been 541 deaths in the Maule region on the Chilean coast, which was closest to the epicenter of the 8.8-magnitude quake.
