Leo Pike was one of several dozen Hawaii residents who participated in the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15, and was standing near the finish line when two bombs were detonated at around 3 p.m.

The Boston Marathon web site, which held the marathon on Patriot’s Day, a holiday in Massachusetts, lists 57 people from Hawaii as being registered to participate in the marathon.

“Everyone is safe,” Pike said in an email to Hawaii Reporter. “Many of the Hawaii crew were standing around the family and friends area when it happened. We had three or four friends out in the field but thanks to social media we were able to ascertain quickly that everyone was ok.”

Angela Kwong said on Facebook that she is “ok” – and believes other Hawaii runners are too – but they are “a bit shaken up.”

Chris Benjamin, president and chief operating officer for Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., was also in the marathon. He told Hawaii Reporter late Monday night that he is uninjured and on his way back home. Earlier in the day, Suzy Hollinger, a spokesperson for A&B, said:. “Chris indicated that he finished the race 8 minutes prior to the explosion and was in the finisher chute about 50 yards from the bomb when it went off. He said he heard a loud explosion and then saw smoke billowing up, but not much else. His family was exiting the grandstand area across Boylston when the blast went off.  Chris and his family are all safe and his teammates and their families are safe.”

Three people are confirmed dead, including an 8-year-old boy, and at least 176 people were injured. A 20-year-old Saudi national is under guard at a Boston hospital but police are not calling him a suspect.

U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa, D-HI, said: “My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by today’s senseless attack in Boston.”

“I wish the victims a speedy recovery and hope their loved ones are able to find comfort during this difficult time. I would like to acknowledge the brave first responders, volunteers, and the everyday citizens who ran towards danger in order to help those in need.”

“As more information becomes available, we will find out who is responsible for this attack. Whether the enemy is foreign or domestic, they will be brought to justice. The people of Hawaii and the United States will stand by our brothers and sisters in Boston.”

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, D-HI, said: “I am deeply saddened by the senseless, violent attacks at the Boston Marathon today. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Boston, and all those who have been impacted by these attacks, and especially with those who lost loved ones today. The swift and professional reaction of the first responders and law enforcement on the scene is to be greatly commended, as they put their lives on the line to save lives and ensure the safety of others.”

“Those who carried out this heinous attack will be brought to justice and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.   I will continue to monitor this situation closely, work with my colleagues on the Homeland Security Committee, and with our law enforcement community to ensure the safety and security of the American people.”

FBI Special Agent Tom Simon said:  “The Honolulu FBI Joint Terrorist Task Force is monitoring the situation in Boston through law enforcement and intelligence channels. We have no credible information of any  imminent threat of violence targeting Hawaii.”

Toni Schwartz, the Public Information Officer for the Department of Public Safety, said: “The Department of Public Safety will work with our law enforcement partners, both county and federal, to decide if any other security measures are needed, based upon the current threat analysis for Hawaii. The public can be assured that, based upon today’s events, large venues or activities will be scrutinized thoroughly.”
