Hawaii Kai to Discuss Carnival on Great Lawn

State Rep. Gene Ward

State Rep. Gene Ward, emcee

HONOLULU – News that a carnival is taking place on the "Great Lawn" adjacent Hawaii Kai Drive and Keahole Streets on the weekends of March 14-16 and 21-23 has taken many community members by surprise, given that no public feedback was solicited before the short announcement. Because of this, elected officials in East Honolulu are calling upon the Hawaii Kai community to express their opinion on issues surrounding the carnival such as safety, traffic, parking, and land use.

Events such as this are almost always discussed and approved at the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board.  In the absence of an emergency meeting of the board, Senator Sam Slom, Senator Laura Thielen and Representative Gene Ward are holding the meeting at the Oahu Club.

The Town Hall meeting will be an opportunity for carnival organizer, Rich Miano to explain to the community what and why the carnival was planned and implemented without community input and how community concerns should be handled.  Miano has stated that EK Fernandez, Kamehameha Schools and the Honolulu Police Department would be present at the meeting.

"On behalf of Senators Thielen and Slom, I want to encourage community members to attend and voice their opinions at this meeting," said Rep. Gene Ward (R – Hawaii Kai-Kalama Valley).
