Takai, Anderson are Latest Democrats to Enter Congressional District 1 Race

Rep. Mark Takai is a congressional candidate in 2014

Who will be Hawaii’s next Congress member in District 1?

Mark Takai, a state representative for nearly two decades, announced his plans yesterday to run for that seat.

Takai said his top issues, should he be elected, would be breaking the partisan gridlock in Washington D.C., expanding clean energy use, strengthening Hawaii's education system, finding ways to make Hawaii’s economy stronger and making Hawaii more affordable.

Takai was recently promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Hawaii Army National Guard, and before that, was deployed in 2009 to the Middle East.

Another area of focus for Takai would be to build a stronger military presence in Hawaii.

Two other Democrats have already announced plans to run for Congress, including state Senator Will Espero and Honolulu Council Member Stanley Chang.

Today, Honolulu Council Member Ikaika Anderson will announce his plans to run for Congress at a press conference at noon in the Kakaako Waterfront Park.

Anderson has served two terms on the Honolulu City Council and is currently the Vice-Chair of the Council.

So far, no Republicans have entered the race.

U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, D-HI, currently represents Congressional District 1. She will run for U.S. Senate in 2014 against incumbent U.S. Senator Brian Schatz.

  2. His plans sound good, but the important thing is sticking to your word after you've been elected.

  3. I think military is very important. I am not a violent person and I never think violence is the right answer for anything, but we should always be prepared in this world we live in
