Hawaii Journalist, John Heckathorn, died at 65 this week. The former editor of Honolulu Magazine and local food and entertainment columnist, had been working as a full time journalism professor at the Hawaii Pacific University.

A. Kam Napier, editor of Honolulu Magazine, and Alyson Helwagen, publisher, issued a statement this week:

“We are deeply saddened to announce that John Heckathorn passed away early this morning.  He’s long been an integral part of our magazine, as our dining editor since the late 1980s, as an associate editor until 1993, writing on all things Honolulu, and as our editor from 1993 to 2005. This past fall, he moved to a full-time position at Hawai‘i Pacific University, teaching journalism, but continued to write our monthly dining column and contribute to our website. Heckathorn was an exceptional man. The city will not be the same without him.”
