Media's Glaring Omission-Hussein Terrorizing His Own Hapless Civilians Into Fighting a Superior Military Force

The ”’Washington Post”’ staff writer William Branigin’s breathlessly detailed account of 3rd Infantry Division soldiers killing civilians at a check point (‘Fog of war’ leaves 10 Iraqi civilians dead by U.S. hands) as reprinted by the ”’Honolulu Advertiser”’ on Tuesday, April 1, 2003, contains a glaring omission. What omission? The now indisputable fact that Saddam Hussein is attempting to wage asymmetrical warfare by terrorizing his own hapless civilians into fighting a superior military force against their will.

The question that should have been posed by Mr. Branigan (and others) is why would a civilian vehicle containing children be driven by unarmed non combatants at breakneck speed attempting to ram through a heavily armed military checkpoint in spite of numerous warnings? Why would anyone take such a suicidal risk?

From Hussein’s perspective, the answer is clear: to achieve a propaganda edge. Indeed the very propaganda faithfully re-broadcast by Washington Post (and Advertiser). Clearly Hussein is attempting what might be termed the Mogadishu Gambit in hopes we will become dispirited and withdraw our forces from battle like Clinton did during his first year in office in the wake of “Blackhawk down”.

How long will it take Americans to realize our terrorist enemies are trying to play Advertiser and other media outlets like a violin? In the new reality that has emerged since the 9/11 war was declared on us a year and a half ago, we must accept the unpleasant fact there are no front lines. We are all in the impact area. We are all targets. The strategy chosen by terrorists to defeat us is information warfare. Make no mistake: propaganda ”’is”’ a potent weapon, especially when uncritically accepted as truth by one’s adversary and faithfully relayed to the population at large. If you are tempted to doubt it, ask the Hanoi Politburo.

In the rush to meet deadlines and determine how current news is to be formatted for publication, Advertiser now faces an unenviable choice. How does one report accurately the salient details of fast moving events without being sucked into the role of giving aid and comfort to the enemy by uncritically delivering ”’their”’ propaganda? We who support our brave men and women in combat and pray for their early, victorious return home must keep in mind the need to be critical thinkers, both patient and vigilant when reading our newspapers. Mistakes will be made and lessons will be learned. We must not be overly critical when our news media make mistakes, but trust they will learn from their errors and improve the quality of their service.

We here at home must avoid the temptation to take the counsel of fear or discouragement. Our brave troops have courage in abundance. We have a duty to emulate their courage. This is, after all, a war in which we are all combatants, a war that will determine whether we survive as a people and as a nation.

Above all else we must persist in the face of adversity.

War Hurts Tourism, But Not Like Sept. 11

    0

MIAMI, March 31 (UPI) — The war in Iraq has delivered a blow to tourism, but industry researchers say mixed reports indicate that it isn’t likely to be as severe as the one after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Except for the troubled airline industry, there are no signs of job cuts or other major cost-cutting measures similar to the pull-back after Sept. 11.

Many businesses say they are more prepared for hard times and are leaner and more cost-efficient.

Still, Smith Travel Research in Hendersonville, Tenn., said hotel occupancy dropped nearly 5 percent and room rates dropped 4 percent in the first few days of the war.

Hilton Hotels Corp. revised its revenue forecast for the first quarter, estimating a 4 percent drop from 2002. For the full year of 2003 Hilton expects a drop of 1 percent to 2 percent.

PricewaterhouseCoopers revised its analysis of the war’s impact on tourism as hostilities began.

“Domestic travel and lodging demand will certainly be affected by the war and the related security warnings,” the report said.

It said that if the war lasts only 30 to 45 days, lodging will decrease by 4.9 percent or 126,000 occupied rooms per night, compared with the average over the past several years.

The projection, assuming a short war, gets more optimistic for the second half of the year.

“First, postponed leisure travel will recover just as the peak summer travel season begins,” the analysis said. “Summer travel under this scenario will surpass 1999 levels but will still remain 1.2 percent below the record level experienced in 2000.

“Second, the removal of geopolitical uncertainty will lead to a rebound in business travel as economic travel accelerates.”

Tia Gordon, spokeswoman for the American Hotel and Lodging Association, said recent numbers aren’t yet available and it was too early to tell. But unlike the days following Sept. 11, she said the feeling in her organization is optimistic.

“We don’t have any numbers, but as far as we know a lot of folks are still traveling,” Gordon said. “We haven’t seen any thing overwhelming as far as cancellations or postponements. A lot of people are sitting and waiting.”

She said many hotels have altered their cancellation policies making them more guest-friendly.

Air travel is expected to suffer the most, however, because of the industry’s already weakened condition.

Airline traffic in the first week of the war fell 10 percent internationally and 7 percent domestically, a report by the Air Transport Association said.

“As we outlined just a few weeks ago, the airline industry is in a seriously weakened state and now is beginning to buckle from the non-market blow being dealt by the war,” said James C. May, president of the association.

“The airlines have been making the tough decisions, necessary to cut costs, to cope with existing market conditions,” he said.

“But the war in Iraq, combined with domestic terrorism threats that keep the nation at Code Orange high alert, are non-market forces putting extraordinary negative pressure on demand.”

Aussies: Iraq Hides Arms in Historic Sites

    0

CANBERRA, Australia, April 2 (UPI) — Australia Wednesday accused Iraq of using historic sites to hide its weapons and Prime Minister John Howard continued to defend the length of the war, as anti-war protests in Sydney led to one arrest.

Australian Defense Force spokesman Brig. Mike Hannan said Iraq was using historic sites, such as the Ctesiphon, to hide its weapons. According to Hannan, Iraqi vehicles were parked in strategic places at the site, which is protected under The Hague Convention.

The ancient city — dated to the 2nd century BC — lies on the Tigris River, southeast of Baghdad. The Hague Convention protects the world’s cultural and heritage sites.

Hannan said the Iraqis were also using hospitals and humans for similar purposes.

“It is absolutely a tactic and I mean it reflects in all sorts of ways … the use of hospitals, the use of civilian shields, the use of troops dressed in civilian clothes and traveling in civilian vehicles and then mounting a surprise attack, this is all consistent behavior,” he said.

Australia’s 2,000-person military contingent is part of the U.S.-led coalition of 250,000 troops that are battling Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein in an attempt to unseat him and rid his country of suspected weapons of mass destruction.

Although support for the war has increased in the country, the length of the conflict — now almost two weeks old — has been criticized.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard defended the length of the war, however.

“I restate the objective now the operation has started and that is the removal of Saddam Hussein’s regime,” he told group of Tasmanian business owners as a group of 60 anti-war protestors demonstrated outside. “Anything short of that would be unacceptable to the U.S., the U.K. and Australia.”

In Washington, Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer had an unscheduled meeting with U.S. President Bush. The half-hour meeting touched upon the issues of Iraq and North Korea.

“(I) had a very lively and engaging discussion with him,” Downer said.

Bush and Downer also discussed the role of the United Nations in a post-Saddam Iraq. Both nations want the world body to have a liaison position in Iraq rather than running the interim administration.

He said the switch to a government run by Iraqis will not be immediate.

“It’s likely to come in on a gradual basis, that is portfolios or policy areas which are less contentious to be taken over by Iraqis very quickly, through to security policy and so on to be taken over more slowly,” he said.

The opposition Labor Party said, however, an interim U.N. administration is needed for Iraq to get back on its feet.

“I don’t think there’s any alternative other than to go through an interim U.N. administration because the neutrality of that administration would be central in politically stabilizing a democratic outcome for Iraq,” Labor’s Kevin Rudd said.

Some 300 people who are against the war in Iraq gathered at the Sydney Town Hall Wednesday for anti-war protests organized by the Books not Bombs coalition and at least one person was arrested.

Protests last week turned violent and the police had warned of arrests if the demonstrators attempted to march Wednesday. The arrested youth was involved in protests last week and police identified him using video footage.

“Schoolchildren in uniforms, groups of young men and older protesters have gathered on one side of Town Hall while at least 200 police have gathered around the area,” the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Downer and Bush also discussed a possible Australian role in Iraq once Saddam was deposed. Downer said Australia has experience working with the Iraqis on wheat trade, dry land farming and irrigation.

“This is the niche Australia very neatly fits into and so during my visit here we’ve been talking to the Americans about different ways that Australia can slot into that area,” he said.

    Healthy Ambition vs. Overachievement

    0

    “Suzanne Gelb Image”

It is natural to strive to do our best, to aim high, and to challenge defeat. But at some point, for many of us, ambition and overachievement begin to vie with each other.

When overachievement wins, victory no longer tastes sweet and defeat leaves a bitter taste that’s hard to erase.

Why do the paths of these two constructs cross and conflict, and why does healthy striving often take a back seat to compulsive productivity?

To understand such complexities, let’s explore ambition vs. overachievement.

Ambition can be thought of as a hunger to learn, to do, to explore and to make things happen for a good cause and for the love of life. Overachieving is a compulsive behavior borne out of fear, shame and guilt.

The fear is of never measuring up, not having enough, not being the best; a fear of being left behind. The overachiever tends to live in dread that “there is not enough time, I’m always too late, the bus will leave without me, the well will dry up before I get there.”

The overachiever tends to avoid emotional attachments and forgoes a personal life.

“I can’t be tied down by a relationship until I do this, or achieve that; it will get in the way of my goals, I’ll miss out” (must keep up with the Joneses, must have a car like theirs, can’t miss a day’s work because I need to buy that”).

Women are susceptible to overachievement because despite women’s lib, many feel that they are the inferior sex. This can drive them to prove otherwise, to excel and to try to be better than, or at least as good as men.

This syndrome can also afflict those men who have developed inferiorities due to traumatic childhoods, or from being compared to the Joneses, for example. “I must never let my guard down or else my roof won’t be the quality of the Jones’s across the street.

“I need a bigger house, a better car, a prettier wife, smarter kids, and greener grass on my lawn. Without this, I am nothing and nobody.”

I believe that in some areas women supersede men and vice versa. Women were designed genetically for their role of managing the family, the social unit; whereas it is natural for men to defend and provide.

If we could respect these roles and the skills and the talents required to perform them, I believe that our society and our country would be even stronger and more productive. We would probably become greater than great.

I have shared some possible reasons for overachievement. Remember that who we are is not about what we have or what we can accomplish. Our worth is not measured by our achievements.

Prioritize strong values, integrity, self-respect and respect for others. Then overachievement can be a non-issue, as one is free from the fear, guilt, and shame upon which it thrives; and ambition can be enjoyed as a healthy motivator that supports exploring and making things happen for a good cause and for the love of life.

    – Booz Allen Hamilton Looks to 2003

    By Greg Scandlen

One of the most interesting things to come out since the first of the
year is a letter from Gary Ahlquist, Senior Vice President at Booz Allen
Hamilton. This is Gary’s wrap-up of 2002 and look ahead at the coming
year. His perspective is worth paying attention to. He points out that
2002 was a year of neglect on the political front, but “real action” for
intermediaries, including employers, health plans and the IRS. “By the
end of 2002,” he writes, “the United States had answered a question it
was probably unaware it had asked: What structure would the health
benefits system have in the next decade (or two)?” He describes 2003 as
a year of “paradigm drift.” He points out that after the Clinton health
care initiatives, managed care was elevated from being a product to
being “the answer.” “Consumer-directed health plans address the
incomplete agenda left behind by 20 years of managed care
experimentation.” He says that the incomplete agenda includes employer
paternalism, distorted tax policy, the new era of two-income families,
and others. “Defined-contribution consumer-directed health plans will
not be the final form of American health care, but they will be the next
dominant form.” He then predicts some developments that will influence
the business environment in the near future, including: “the
commoditization of catastrophic risk coverage;” the need for new
capabilities for providers and suppliers; “the emerging role for
financial services firms;” continued consolidation and diversification
of health plans; and growth potential for heavily managed care plans. He
concludes by saying, “We believe 2003 will be viewed as the year that a
new wave of major structural change in health care began in earnest.”

The Good: FERC Judge Rules Against California Scheming

An administrative law judge recently issued a preliminary ruling against
the state of California’s contention that it is owed $8.9 billion by
energy companies for their role in the energy crisis of 2000 and 2001.
On December 12th, Judge Bruce L. Birchman of the Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission (FERC) ruled that Enron, Duke Energy, Williams
Companies, and others are only liable for $1.8 billion in damages, and
that the state still owes providers a total of $3 billion. The ruling
must be reviewed by FERC’s three-member commission before it is
    finalized.

FERC officials said they are still reviewing whether providers
artificially inflated natural gas and energy prices by engaging in
manipulative trading tactics and withholding supplies. The agency also
announced that it will require regulators to report evidence of
overcharging by February 28. Other federal and state agencies are also
    conducting investigations.

The decision is a major defeat for the administration of California
Governor Gray Davis, which had accused FERC of ignoring the crisis. “I
am outraged over the action the FERC has taken in rigging the rules so
the administrative law judge had no choice but to give us a pittance
under the rules. We want at least $9 billion back,” said Davis.
California Public Utilities Commission President Loretta Lynch stated,
“Those energy companies illegally lined their pockets at California
rate-payers — expense and FERC is throwing pennies at our feet and
telling us to be happy with that.”

In the CEI policy brief, “California Power Market: ‘Gray’ Days Ahead?,”
former CEI research assistant Thomas Pearson points out that, “Fixing
California’ power problem is not going to be painless. Years of
government intervention and red tape in the power industry will take
time and trouble to overcome.” If only California’s forces of darkness
    would recognize that.

The Bad: Environmentalists Continue to Dodge CAFE’s Impact on Vehicle
    Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently
approved an increase of 1.5 miles per gallon in corporate average fuel
economy (CAFE) standards for its “light truck” category, including SUVs,
minivans, and small trucks. The agency claims the increase — scheduled to
be finalized after a 60-day comment period — can be achieved with current
technologies and without requiring automakers to reduce performance or
vehicle weights. NHTSA administrator Jeffrey Runge said: “We are very
interested in doing whatever we can to increase fuel economy. What we
don’t want to do is to cause a safety consequence.”

Environmentalists attacked the size of the increase as too small,
ignoring evidence linking increased CAFE standards with increased
highway fatalities. Daniel Lashoff of the Natural Resources Defense
Council said, “If you measure the fuel savings in gallons, you’ve got a
trivial amount.” David Friedman of the Union of Concerned Scientists
called the increase “no more than what the industry has already
committed to.” Daniel Becker of the Sierra Club said, “It’s a minuscule
number compared to what’s needed and what’s technically achievable.”
Even Senator John Kerry (D-MA) chimed in: “I think Americans deserve
more than another sham White House effort to pretend to act in the
    interests of energy security.”

But, says CEI general counsel Sam Kazman: “The 2001 National Academy of
Sciences study made it clear that CAF

From Being Late to Being Angry

    0

    “Suzanne Gelb Image”

”Lateness – How Can I be on Time?”

    Dear Dr. Gelb:

Every morning, my wife and I ride to work together because we have one car in our family and work at the same office. She is always late, which makes me late. When I asked her why she is late, she says it’s because I’m lazy and she is tidying up after me. Now I tidy up after myself, but she is still late. I don’t like being late, and I have thought of leaving without her, but I’m afraid she’ll miss work and lose the day’s pay. What should I do?

    Late for Work

    A: Dear Late:

As you mentioned, you have tried to help her solve the problem. There is one more thing that some people have found to work in these types of situations. They set their alarm clock 30 minutes earlier and observe the tardy person’s time and activity for a few days. If the lateness persists, then clearly the problem has nothing to do with the formerly lazy spouse. The next step would be to inform the tardy individual that if they are not ready to leave early enough to get to work, they will have to take the bus or catch a cab — give them a warning early enough in the morning, that if they are not ready at a certain time, then their ride will leave without them.

”Obnoxious Supervisor – How Can I Ignore It?”

    Dear Dr. Gelb:

I am an intern in the mental health field and the supervisor at my field placement is so condescending, I feel like I want to punch him out. Also, I don’t agree with some of his patient assessments, but I’m the lowly intern and so my opinion doesn’t count. That’s ok, “I’ll have my day in court” when I graduate and get my license, but what do I do in the meantime because I get angry when I have to listen to the supervisor’s arrogance? Thanks for letting me vent.

    Venting

    A: Dear Venting:

The type of anger you describe is often linked to trying to be in charge or responsible for other people’s behavior. Their choice to be arrogant, obnoxious and unfriendly is their problem and no one else’s. It is important not to take responsibility for other people’s behavior. It is a waste of time to try to change it. If I were in your situation, I’d do my work to the best of my ability and let their rhetoric go in one ear and out the other.

Hero or Scoundrel – You Vote – Rep. Bud Stonebraker Wants 3-Strikes Law Passed in Hawaii-Hawaii Kai Republican Fights to Get Law Poised to Pass This Session, Despite Strong Opposition by Democrat Majority

    0

State Rep. Bud Stonebraker, R-Hawaii Kai, says it is time the state gets tough on crime.

He and other Republicans in the state Legislature have called on the Democrat majority in the House and Senate to amend current legislation to allow the debate and passage of a “3-strikes” law in Hawaii. Republicans have fought for several Legislative sessions to get a 3-strikes law passed, and say Hawaii must immediately wage a “war on crime” by passing such legislation this session.

Also supporting the intent of the legislation are the governor, the state attorney general, the U.S. attorney, other law enforcement leaders and the majority of the public. Not in support are the Democrats in the House and Senate who say they do not want to rush the process and would rather study the issue further and convene a taskforce to do so. They say they are concerned people who have been convicted of “victimless” crimes could be unfairly put away for life.

However, Stonebraker and other Republicans say the Three Strikes law in Hawaii could be crafted so a prosecutor has the option to seek a life sentence for career criminals convicted of their third felony, including one felony involving violence against an individual, Stonebraker says.

He maintains Hawaii residents and visitors would have benefited many times over from a reduction in crime, including violent crime, should a law have been passed earlier in Hawaii. He points to the most recent murder in Hawaii, which took place on Saturday, March 29, where Emmanuel Tunoa, a career criminal with a previous murder conviction and 56 arrests, allegedly shot to death another male victim.

Citing statistics from California that show 60 percent of the crimes are committed by 6 percent of the criminals, and that by passing 3-Strikes, California reduced its crime rate by more than 40 percent, Stonebraker says by putting violent criminals in jail for life will make Hawaii safer. He says Hawaii, the “Aloha state,” must be a safe place to live and visit, or not just the victims will suffer –
