REPORT FROM MAUI COUNTY – In a strong show of support by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 142, union officials have already announced their endorsement of Mayor Alan Arakawa for his 2014 re-election bid.

The ILWU sent a letter of endorsement out to the Friends of Alan Arakawa on April 16, 2012. Even though the mayoral election is two years away the ILWU knows that the right man for the job is already on the job.

“The ILWU Maui Division, with 7,000 plus members, are in strong support of Mayor Alan Arakawa,” said ILWU Maui Division Director William Kennison. “He has shown tremendous leadership in leading Maui County forward during this difficult and trying times.

“The Maui Division along with the Longshore Division feel that he understands what is needed to keep our people employed.”

“I am humbled and very grateful for their endorsement at this early stage,” said Arakawa. “Thank you to ILWU and their members for their trust, encouragement and assurance that we are Getting It Done!”

“Getting It Done” is Arakawa’s theme for his re-election campaign in 2014. The Friends of Alan Arakawa feel that this is a great sign and a beginning for more good news to come.

“We are working tirelessly with groups like the ILWU in order to build a diverse coalition of Maui Nui residents who are truly committed to growing our local economy with family wage jobs,” said Arakawa Campaign 2014 Chair Lynn Araki-Regan. “It’s a coalition that includes business leaders and the working men and women of organized labor.

“We are thrilled to have and sincerely appreciate ILWU’s support.”
