Home resales decreased by 7.2% from a month earlier, to a 5.05 million annual rate, the National Association of Realtors said. The second-straight plunge came despite extended government tax relief, raising doubt about the housing-sector recovery.

The median price for an existing home was $164,700 in January, the same as January 2009. Year-over-year, sales were up 11.5%.
