Hawaii’s Energy Trend Data Released for June 2010

The June 2010 Energy Trend Data have been released.

Following are highlights:

• In June 2010, the national average price for regular gasoline was $2.727 per gallon, which represented a 3.2% increase from the same month a year ago.
• Hawaii’s June 2010 price for regular gasoline averaged $3.475, which was about $0.748 or 27.4% higher than the national average for the same month.
• Hawaii’s June 2010 price for regular gasoline decreased $0.088 or -2.47% from May 2010.
• Among the prices of regular gasoline for Honolulu, Wailuku, and Hilo, as reported by the American Automobile Association, Wailuku had the highest price at $3.794 and represented a decrease of $0.118 or 3.02% from the previous month (May 2010). The price of regular gasoline for Honolulu was $3.364 and Hilo was $3.458 in June.
• As of June 2010, there were 915,105 registered taxable gasoline passenger vehicles in the state, 1.1% decrease from the same period last year (June 2009).  There were 21,535 registered taxable diesel freight vehicles, 5% decrease from the same period last year.  There were 168 registered taxable electric passenger vehicles or a 7.7% decrease from June 2009.
• Hawaii’s statewide demand for gasoline, as measured by gasoline tax base, decreased 6.1% in April 2010 from the same month a year ago. All the neighbor islands experienced decreases in gasoline demand this April with Kauai County decreased the most at 63.4%, followed by Maui County (-43.8%), and Hawaii County (-22.7%),  while Honolulu County experienced increase at 24.8% as compared to the April figures a year ago.  Overall, Hawaii’s year-to-date (January to April 2010) demand for gasoline showed a 9.0% decrease from the same period last year.
• Crude oil price at the New York Mercantile Exchange averaged $75.41 per barrel in June 2010 which was 8.2% higher compared to the same month last year.
• Crude oil price increased $1.29 or 1.73% from May 2010. Year-to-date through June the future price of crude oil was 52.6% higher than the same period a year ago.
• Hawaii’s year-to-date (January to April) 2010 total import of foreign crude oil was up 1.2% compared to the same period a year ago. In April 2010, there were 55,000 barrels of foreign imports of propane.  Year-to-date through April, foreign imports of propane totaled 158,000 barrels or a 295.0% increase from the same period a year ago.
• In June 2010, the national average price for diesel was $2.979 which was an increase of 15.8% from the same month a year ago.  In Hawaii, the average price for diesel in June 2010 was $3.959 which was $0.981 or 32.9% higher than the national average.  In June 2010, Wailuku’s market had the highest average price of diesel at $4.200 among Hawaii’s market.
• Hawaii’s current year-to-date (through April) demand for diesel, highway use, as measured by the diesel oil tax base, increased 21.2% compared to the same period a year ago.
• The electric utilities’ total net revenue for May 2010 was $12.4 million or an increase of 31.0% in comparison to the same period a year ago.  Year-to-date, the electric utilities net revenue was up 33.4% from the same period 2009 level.
• The energy cost adjustment factor for electricity effective June 1, 2010 for each of the islands was as follows:  Kauai (0.00624 $/kWh); Oahu (0.04505 $/kWh); Maui (0.13992 $/kWh); Lanai (0.17374 $/kWh); Molokai (0.15761 $/kWh); Hawaii (0.11497 $/kWh)
